My discovery @ 2 AM!
I can't sleep because of the Dr Pepper consumed this past even, so I told myself I would get up and read from the Word of God if I had not fallen asleep by 2:10AM. Well, it's 2:18AM, so I've been reading, just a little.
Well, anyway, I'm reading in Genesis 20. Always before, when I read this chapter I thought of Sarah in the general terms of "young, beautiful, one very well endowed in muliebrity". My friends, did not Sarah laugh at the thought of bearing children because of her age in the chapters just prior to this one? In chapter 17, Abraham silently laughed at the thought that he, at the age of 100, and Sarah, at the age of 90, could bear children! Can you believe it? She was over the age of 90 and she was still desirable to a king who by no means sounded like he had never married or did not already posess multiple wives and / or concubines. What does this mean? Well, I dasn't know for sure. Perhaps they weren't as old as we at the same age in that time or perhaps he recognized a good woman when he saw one, even at the age of 90+. Just an observation I'd never made before.
Oh, and another thought. Given, of course, that we don't know how aging age was back then, one could almost say from the way Sarah giggles to herself in Genesis 18:12, saying "After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?" that their libidos had nearly ceased to exist, making the miracle of Issac even more astonishing. She was, after all, post-menopausal it says, so who can know it? Let's just say this isn't exactly the most fertile couple you'd expect the Lord to raise a mighty people from. ;-)
Another observation: We know and hear the story over and over that Issac was named Issac because of his mother's laughter, but is it not also doubly because of Abraham's silent laughter in Genesis 17? A simple sample thought. :-)
Ok, I'll quit soon, but I have one more thing to show you that I've just recently noticed.
Gen 9:25 And he said, Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren.
Gen 9:26 And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.
Gen 9:27 God shall enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.
Is not this prophecy? Follow the lineage of these three brothers and you'll see that Ham, who was cursed by Noah, begat all of the evil nations like the Philistines, the Amorites, the city of Nineveh and the inhabitants thereof, and Nimrod, the king of Bable. Certainly it could be said that the statement uttered by Noah was confirmed prophetic by the reading of this ignoble line which did much that was evil in the sight of the Lord.
On the other hand, Noah blesses "the Lord God of Shem", which I think you'll agree is the same phrase as "the Lord God of Abraham, Issac, and Jacob". What this signifies to me is that since it is of the line of Shem from which Abraham came and therefore, Issac, Jacob, Judah, David, Solomon, and, ultimately, Christ Himself, this statement is also prophetic. Isn't that neat? ;-)
Perhaps tomorrow I shall find out what, exactly, it means when it says Japheth shall dwell in the tents of Shem. For now I'd say it sounds like a servant-master relationship, with Shem being the benevolent master like unto Abraham, and Japheth perhaps being like unto Eliezer of Damascus, which was the servant that was going to inherit the household of Abraham had not Issac been born. Think about it. Ain't it swell? ;-)
I'm interested in theology, philosophy, history, life, and wives. If you remain here long enough, you'll probably hear something about each of these things.

As for Japheth being enlarged, and dwelling in the tents of Shem........
All of the blessings that we (who are the descendants of Japheth) enjoy have come through Shem and his descendant, the promised Messiah. Remember God said that in Israel and Israel’s seed all the families of the earth would be blessed....
So it's sorta like being Shem's guest......the stranger within his gates....
It makes sense. :-)
Yes, Canaan was the youngest son of Ham( Genesis 10:6 ). :-)
